There are many definitions of what a Saint is. For example, a Saint is an example of holiness that we can follow with confidence, or a saint is always someone through whose life we learn what God is like - and of what we are called to be. We pray with saints, not to them. Have you ever asked anyone to pray for you when you were having a hard time? Why did you choose to ask that person? You may have chosen someone you could trust, or someone who understood your problem, or someone who was close to God. Those are all reasons we ask saints to pray for us in times of trouble. Since saints led holy lives and are close to God in heaven, we feel that their prayers are particularly effective. Often we ask particular saints to pray for us if we feel they have a particular interest in our problem.
Patron saints are chosen as special protectors or guardians over areas of life. These areas can include occupations, illnesses, churches, countries, causes -- anything that is important to us. There are over 10,000 named saints and beati from history, the Roman Martyology and Orthodox sources, but no definitive "head count".
St. Christopher is typically depicted as a tall, middle-aged, bearded man with a staff who wades across a river carrying the Christ child on his shoulders. As the story goes, the extremely robust Christopher devoted his life to carrying people across an otherwise unfordable stream. One day a little child appeared before him and asked to be carried across. To Christopher's surprise, as he forded the river, the child steadily increased in weight until Christopher found his tiny burden so heavy that it was almost impossible to bear. When he asked the holy babe why he weighed so much, the child replied that he carried the world's sins upon his shoulders. As a reward for his service, Christopher's staff was miraculously transformed into a living tree. He is the patron saint of travellers and his feast day is 25th July.
This stunning necklace is handmade using 8mm Blue Banded Agate semi-precious beads on silver iron craft wire. The medal shows an image of St Christopher carrying Christ the child, and on the other side shows text that reads 'Protect Us'.
Total length is 18" and comes in a handmade lined crochet pouch. Prayer card and short description of stones and saint also included.
